Growing Up
I spend my childhood oversees, in Austria and Germany, and all told I've spent roughly twenty years of my life living in Europe.
Colorado & the Army
I went to Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs and from there to the United States Military Academy at West Point, where I graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation came Airborne and Ranger Schools, followed by service as an Army officer, primarily in Germany, where I served as a platoon leader and company commander.
Business & Technology
After leaving the Army, I spent two years in banking before joining Chatham Financial, where I was one of the first five employees. Over the next decade, I helped build Chatham from a small company operating out of a garage in rural Pennsylvania into a global financial services and technology firm. My work ranged across technology, operations, new businesses, and international expansion, including helping establish offices in London, Krakow, and Denver.
After Chatham, I started several companies of my own before eventually joining two of the Big Four professional services firms, Deloitte and KPMG. As a Managing Director, I advised some of the world's largest financial institutions and built technology businesses and products, including early-generation artificial intelligence technologies for financial risk functions.
After the Big Four, I took on a couple of less conventional roles. I joined a small team doing merchant banking in Central Europe, and later spent a year as CTO building a digital-asset streaming and trading platform. By that point, I had spent a career building companies, products, and technology — and had accumulated a fairly eclectic collection of jobs along the way.
At the same time, I had spent the better part of two decades renovating houses and building and fixing just about anything I could get my hands on — kitchens, bathrooms, sheds, patios, landscaping, irrigation, carpentry, and plenty of things that didn't go quite as planned the first time. The mechanical engineer in me never really went away. I've always liked understanding how things work, figuring out why they don't, and building a better solution.
BigBoy
Eventually, the long commutes, airports, conference rooms, and suits started to get old. More importantly, I was ready to build something I could stick with for the long term, around work I had loved doing for years.
So I put the suits on the rack, returned to my hometown of Colorado Springs, and started BigBoy Builders. As an added benefit, it gave me a perfectly legitimate excuse to spend more time with my granddaughter — which may or may not have influenced the choice of location.
