It's not mulch versus rock — it's mulch where plants matter, rock where permanence matters. Here's how to split the yard.

The Real Question Is Where, Not Which
Homeowners usually frame this as a one-time either/or. The yards that look good in year ten split the difference deliberately: wood mulch where plants need to thrive, rock where permanence and crisp edges matter. Each material is genuinely better at its half of the job.

Where Each One Belongs
- Wood mulch: around trees, shrubs, perennial beds — anywhere roots and soil life matter.
- Rock: side yards, utility strips, drainage paths, wind-blasted corners, and the five feet against the house (fire-wise and splash-free).
- Rock for dry creek beds and downspout outfalls — it's functional armor there, not decoration.
- Keep rock off the root zones of moisture-loving plants, especially on south exposures.
- Use steel or quality poly edging at every mulch-rock and mulch-lawn boundary; the materials stay where they belong.
- Under rock: commercial woven fabric, always. Under wood mulch: no fabric — let the mulch feed the soil.
The Fabric Rule Everyone Gets Backwards
Landscape fabric belongs under rock and only under rock. There it keeps stone from sinking into clay and blocks weeds from below. Under wood mulch it backfires: the mulch composts into a soil layer on top of the fabric, weeds root happily in that layer, and meanwhile the fabric seals the real soil off from the organic matter that was the point of mulching. Ten-year-old fabric under mulch is always the same archaeology — a weedy mat welded into the bed.
